Strength, Durability and Duty Classification

Selecting the correct duty classification is an important part of doorset specification.

particularly where long-term performance and reliability are essential. Different building types place very different demands on doorsets, and products should be selected to suit the expected service conditions rather than appearance alone.

Mechanical performance classifications are defined in EN 1192 and are used to indicate the suitability of a doorset for different levels of use. These classifications are supported by test standards covering areas such as durability, impact resistance, and resistance to loading during normal operation. Together, they provide a consistent basis for assessing how a doorset is likely to perform in service.

The recognised duty classifications are:

LD – Light Duty
For low-frequency use in environments where users are generally expected to treat the door with care, such as private residential settings.

MD – Medium Duty
For moderate levels of use where some accidental misuse may occur.

HD – Heavy Duty
For higher-frequency use in commercial or public environments, where the doorset is likely to experience more regular use and less careful handling.

SD – Severe Duty
For demanding environments with very high levels of use and an increased likelihood of impact or misuse, such as schools, hospitals, and other busy public buildings.

GE Door Manufacturing doorsets are typically designed to meet Severe Duty (Class 4) performance, demonstrating suitability for challenging and high-traffic environments. Some specialist doorsets, including certain high-acoustic or performance-led constructions, may be classified as Heavy Duty (Class 3) depending on the design, configuration, and intended application.

As with all doorsets, the final specification should reflect both the required performance level and the conditions of use.
